To the rescue: here’s how to give your skin some extra love in autumn

Now that autumn is in full swing, not only your face, but also the skin on your body is experiencing the effects of colder weather, dry air and changing temperatures. Skin can dry out more quickly and feel chapped, especially in areas such as your legs, arms and elbows. That’s why it’s important to give your skin some extra love at this time of year. We tell you how to do this.

Invest in a rich body lotion or oil

The dry autumn air can dry out your skin, leading to flaking and itching. A rich, nourishing body lotion or oil can help. Apply it immediately after showering, when your skin is still slightly damp. This helps to retain moisture and keep the skin hydrated. Look for ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil or jojoba oil for an intensely nourishing effect.

    Exfoliate your body weekly

Dead skin cells can accumulate and leave your skin feeling dull. Exfoliating regularly, such as with a gentle scrub or an exfoliating glove, will stimulate cell renewal and restore your skin’s smoothness and radiance. Be sure not to exfoliate too hard to avoid irritation, especially if your skin is sensitive due to the cold.

Take a lukewarm rather than a hot shower

Although a hot shower can be tempting when it’s cold outside, it can strip the natural oils from your skin, making it even drier. Therefore, opt for lukewarm water and keep shower sessions short. Finish with a nourishing body lotion to maintain moisture in your skin.

    Protect your hands and feet

Your hands and feet often get the full brunt in the colder months. Protect your hands by using a moisturizer and wear gloves when you go outside. For your feet, you can apply a thick foot cream or even an oil before you go to bed, and wear socks to retain hydration. This helps prevent dry, cracked heels.

Pay attention to your nutrition and hydration

What you eat and drink inside also affects the health of your skin. Make sure you drink enough water to prevent dehydration, even in the fall. In addition, add healthy fats to your diet, such as avocados, nuts and fish, which contain omega-3 fatty acids and help nourish your skin from the inside out.
